Rhinoceros 3D

In the following section you will learn how to import your Rhino model into HEGIAS.

HEGIAS supports the vendor-independent BIM format and the most widely used 3D CAD formats for architectural, building and construction plans. A complete list of supported file formats can be found here.

This article shows our recommended settings for model export from Rhino 7. These settings are provided as an example and may vary from project to project.

Note: IFC export from Rhino is only possible if the model contains only BIM-enabled geometry and was created using a BIM compatible plug-in, for example VisualARQ. For conventional mesh or NURBS models, it is better to export your model in MotionBuilder(*.fbx) format.

FBX Export

Open the export dialog under File > Save as....
Save your file in the file format MotionBuilder (*.fbx)

Use the Options... button to access the FBX export settings. Select the following settings:
Meshes only: NURBS objects cannot be displayed in HEGIAS.
Phong: These settings allow exporting material textures (if Save textures was selected in the previous export dialog).
Map Rhino Z to FBX Y : This will display the model correctly in HEGIAS.
Version 7 binary

If your model contains NURBS geometries, you have to convert them into mesh geometries. To do this, select a suitable setting with the slider or define the meshing parameters under Detailed Controls... .

Tip: To optimize the performance in HEGIAS, the model can already be converted and optimized before the export with the command 'QuadRemesh. The fewer polygons your model has, the faster it will load in HEGIAS.

The OK button closes the export dialog and creates the FBX file.
The exported FBX file is now available for import into HEGIAS.

IFC Export

Define the geometry you want to export. To get to the VisualARQ IFC export options, use the IfcExportOptionsDialog command.

Open the export dialog under File > Save as....
save your file in file format IFC 2x3 Building Model (*.ifc)

Press the Save button to close the export dialog and create the IFC file.
the exported IFC file is now available for import into HEGIAS.
